Implementing proper diet against gum disease

These days, gum disease has been found to be one of the most widespread diseases among adults. This is because of several factors but it generally includes lack of a proper diet and lack of dental hygiene. Believe it or not, having a proper diet is a very important factor in gum disease treatment and prevention.

Based on studies, gum disease was not as widespread as it is during the early years wherein people ate less starchy, preserved and unhealthy foods. Now with fast food and sweets being a common part of one’s diet, gum disease became so common that researchers were just led to the conclusion that diet heavily influences ones dental health and therefore is also an important part of periodontal disease treatment.

So what are the types of food that one should avoid? The list would go pretty long but to summarize it: avoid starchy and sweet foods such as cake, candies and chocolate bars. Popcorn is also a major culprit in tooth and gum disease as it easily gets in between the teeth and stays there for a long time. I’m not really saying that one should totally get rid of these foods on their diet – it should be safe to eat every now and then and as long as one flosses and brushes after the meal to make sure there is no food debris left on the teeth.

And what should be the type of food one should eat? As long as it’s classified to be on the regular list of healthy diet, it would do but it’s important to highly prioritizefoods that are rich in vitamin C, calcium and vitamin D.  Calcium is a highly important mineral to strengthen our bones and since the teeth are bones, they are quite necessary. Vitamin D has been proven to have anti-inflammatory effects and highly increases resistance against gum disease. Lastly, vitamin C has been found to be effective in preventing and treating gum disease and plays a very significant factor in periodontal disease treatment.

Finally, while keeping a proper diet, one should still make sure that they take proper care of their teeth by brushing and flossing regularly. A proper dental routine is just as important as a healthy diet when it comes to periodontal disease treatment and paying your dentist a visit for regular checkup is also as important as they will be the ones to detect early signs of gum disease or give you the assurance that you’re doing the right things when it comes to dental hygiene.
